Adopt an “inside-out” approach when it comes to Healthy Living

HEALTHCARE administrator Ms Janiz Goh, 42, has often been complimented for looking much younger than her age and she has her father to thank for that.

Mr Goh, who worked in the pharmaceutical industry, often reminded his only child during her growing years never to neglect her physical well-being. Janiz says: “He believes in taking an ‘inside-out’ approach when building up one’s health, and in having good skin and hair. When you take care of yourself, you can give your best at work and take care of your family.”

When she was in her 20s, Janiz’s father introduced her to Imedeen’s range of anti-ageing products to help boost collagen production in her skin, which in turn slows down the natural ageing process.

A typical day for Janiz begins at 6.45am. She works from 8.00am to 5.30pm before heading home for dinner with her family and going through her son’s homework with him. Janiz also takes self-improvement courses and has already has completed a graduate diploma and a basic sign language course this year.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, while wrinkle creams, eye serums and other anti-ageing skincare products can reduce the signs of ageing, what makes an anti-ageing plan truly effective is healthy skincare habits.

These include protecting our skin from the sun with a broad-spectrum sun screen that is at least SPF 30; having sufficient rest and a well-balanced diet; exercising regularly; and reducing alcohol consumption. Apply moisturiser every day and wash your face gently twice a day, especially after heavy perspiration.

As part of her daily facial routine, Janiz uses cleanser, toner, moisturiser and serum on her face before applying makeup. Other beauty habits include getting enough sleep, applying eye cream before bedtime three to four times a week – “if I remember!” she says laughingly – as well as going for the occasional facials. She also tries to eat in moderation and wears sunglasses when she is outdoors to protect the sunspots around her eyes.

To keep stress at bay, Janiz spends quality time with her family by going for walks in the nearby park together or relaxing by her condominum’s poolside. She also works out a schedule with her husband to have “me-time”. While he takes care of their son, she meets up with friends for retail therapy or belts out her favourite karaoke tunes to chase the work blues away.
